Future and responsibility
Shaping tomorrow today
Our social and ecological commitment

As a second-generation family business, we recognise our ecological, economic and social responsibility as the most important basis for a liveable future. Visall therefore demonstrates its social and ecological commitment at various levels.
We always take ecological aspects into account in all our corporate decisions in order to make our contribution to greater sustainability, be it in energy generation for the Visall headquarters in Lörrach, heat recovery in the production facilities, the use of resources and materials for our products or in the area of packaging and advertising materials. Careful use of work and production resources, waste-avoiding measures and the constant sensitisation of our employees to this are an essential part of Visall’s identity. In addition, the clear commitment to Germany as a production location emphasises the company’s ecological, economic and social responsibility.
Our internal quality and process procedures are documented and regularly certified according to DIN ISO 9001, ISO 13485 and ISO 14001.

Made in Germany und Swiss Made
The majority of our spectacle lens range is manufactured to the highest environmental standards in Germany and Switzerland. Among other things, state-of-the-art industrial wastewater heat exchangers ensure optimum heat recovery from the production wastewater and the grinding chips resulting from production are separated and recycled.
In addition to faster availability, Made in Germany and Swiss Made also mean a significant minimisation of CO2 emissions thanks to short transport routes.

Climate-neutral company
We take responsibility for future generations. For this reason, we have Visall GmbH’s greenhouse gas emissions regularly recorded and offset them by purchasing “climate protection certificates” (carbon credits) — more than 700 of them since 2019. We use these certificates to support green projects such as reforestation in Uruguay, a run-of-river hydropower plant in Guatemala, rainforest protection in Brazil and a hydropower plant in India. Visall receives the “climate-neutral company” award every year for offsetting greenhouse gases.

Energy with perspective
Hydropower is one of the methods of generating electricity with the least impact. Since 2019, Visall has already saved more than 32 tonnes of CO2 by using green electricity from hydropower. We are also working on reducing our overall energy use. We have also already been able to reduce this significantly.
We naturally use energy-efficient technology, such as new monitors, to achieve this. Some company vehicles are equipped with hybrid technology. Since mid-2021, they and visitors have been recharging at the company’s own charging station with “green electricity” from the power plants on the High Rhine and the River Wiese. Together with the use of job bikes, this has enabled us to further reduce the share of employee mobility and business trips in our carbon footprint.

Conserving resources and reducing microplastics
We also keep an eye on the environment in our grinding workshop. We therefore use an innovative mini centrifuge that ensures that solids and liquids are consistently separated during the grinding process so that they do not enter the water cycle unhindered. At the same time, water consumption is reduced by two thirds and there is no need for additional defoamers.

Cardboard recycling: benefits for people and the environment
At Visall, we reuse undamaged used cardboard boxes and shipping packaging to conserve resources. If cardboard packaging can no longer be used, it does not necessarily end up as wastepaper. Thanks to a cardboard perforator, cardboard that can no longer be used is shredded into environmentally friendly filling material that replaces plastic packaging materials such as bubble wrap or packaging chips.

Sustainably packaged
Not all packaging can be avoided, but it can be made sustainable. To this end, we have switched from plastic zip-lock bags to “non-disposable bags” made of cotton in our grinding service. The optician can return them to us for reuse with the next grinding service submission or give them to the customer together with the finished spectacles.

Paper reduction
A few years ago, we started sending credit notes by email only instead of putting them in an envelope. We also switched to sending invoices by email. The increased conversion of brochures and flyers to digital output formats and the Visall online ordering service save large quantities of paper, including the raw materials wood and water required and the CO2 emissions generated by their dispatch.
As we cannot completely do without print publications, we are also endeavouring to act as sustainably as possible in this area. The Visall catalogue has been printed on recycled paper for many years, as have all brochures and flyers, most of which are FSC-certified.
Back in mid-2016, we reorganised our logistics in order to send our parcels, especially those for the grinding service, in a CO2-neutral way. Our shipping deliveries have also been climate-neutral for several years. In both cases, the resulting transport emissions are offset by the respective service provider by investing in climate protection projects.

Too good to throw away
When stock sunglass lenses no longer match the colour of the new batches and can no longer be sold, we donate them to charitable organisations that ensure that the lenses benefit people who cannot afford glasses, or we make these lenses available to various educational institutions, e. g. the AOV NR optometry training centres.

Visall practices sustainability
We also promote sustainability awareness among our employees by sponsoring a bee colony and actively supporting a mountain forest reforestation project in the Oberallgäu region.
We are constantly working to become even more sustainable — in our production, logistics, sales and marketing. To ensure that we continue to emphasise the responsible use of natural resources in the future, we successfully underwent certification in accordance with the EN ISO 14001 environmental standard in 2023. This is strictly regulated and is monitored annually.
In addition, Visall is actively involved in the IG Nachhaltigkeit special interest group within the framework of the Opti industry trade fair, which also presents the annual Sustainability Award at the Opti
